This month, we’re focusing on the four foundations of mindfulness to explore the classical teachings and wisdom surrounding this practice.
Our first selection for February is a scholarly work called the Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization by Analayo. Recommended by InsightLA instructor Elizabeth Rice, Analayo presents a very full, thorough and clear exposition of the Satipatthana Sutta, in which the Buddha set forth the four foundations of mindfulness. Elizabeth says that “opening this book up to any page leads me to a deeper investigation of some aspect of mindfulness practice, which in turn excites my practice and deepens my concentration.”
Satipatthana is a dense book, so we also want to suggest The Four Foundations of Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana. Recommended by Beth Sternlieb, also an instructor at InsightLA, this book focuses on the same topic, and is a more “accessible yet still thorough dive into the four foundations of mindfulness for a first time reader.”
We hope you enjoy either (or both) of these recommendations for February! And as always, please share your comments with us.
