Thanks for your interest in the Insight LA Mindfulness Meditation for Parents Programs!
Our programs for parents can take many forms, from 6-8 week classes, that meet weekly, to our current 9-month long class, that meets monthly. In addition, Insight LA offers “family days” in which children of various developmental ages, come together with parents, for a day of age-appropriate mindfulness practice, family-style.
Mindfulness is the capacity to be fully present with one’s actual, moment-to-moment experience as it is arising, with kind attention and healthy acceptance. As parents, perhaps the most precious thing we can give our children is the gift of our full presence. This is the deep intention and invitation for parents, as they make space for mindfulness practice in their lives. Also, these classes explore the deep truth that we can only give to our children what we have given first and fundamentally to ourselves. As we become aware of our own deepest needs through practice, mindful parenting involves decoding and addressing the deeper needs of our children, rather than getting mindlessly caught up in and reactive to surface behaviors. Therefore, the cultivation of self-compassion/love, healthy self-acceptance and self-awareness are essential components of skillful and effective mindful parenting. Mindful parenting involves the “inner work”, of coming home to oneself as an authentic human being for the benefit of all. As parents learn to open and “come home” more and more of their unique wholeness, they are more available for their children, seeing and loving them more and more, as they really are.
Along with making space for daily mindfulness practice, both formal and informal, relevant themes are explored, such as managing strong emotions, managing stress and reactivity, mindful communication, sovereignty, recognizing maladaptive mental patterns, as well as cultivating compassion, lovingkindness and self-care.
On a more personal note, I am the parent of two teenage children. The cultivation of these classes for parents arose out of my own personal need. In my life experience, I have found that there is nothing more humbling and challenging than parenting. Parenting is where my mindfulness practice gets tested most. Through the development of these classes, I have brought mindfulness tools and practices directly into the parenting arena, transforming parenting into an eighteen-year retreat. I have found inspiration for these classes from Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn, pioneers in the practice of mindful parenting. Also, through this practice, I count my two children, Amelia and Ethan, as my most profound teachers.
Please see the website for ongoing classes.
